Patriots Backups Trample Giants In Preseason Finale, 27-20

Lots of things to report from last nights game. The Patriots played all backups last night, and instead of doing a recap, I’ll just highlight some players who are trying to earn roster spots.
Le Kevin Smith – Played well, recorded 3 SACKS, and was wreaking havoc all night. He was constantly in the backfield disrupting things against Lorenzen and Droughns. I would look for him to get some significant playing time in the regular season.
Bam Childress – Lined up at running back as well as receiver. At receiver, brought in four passes for 39 yards, and a TD. At runningback, picked up 27 yards on three carries. Bam is one of my favorite players, and has been since 2005. Hopefully his versatility could earn him a roster spot, but I doubt it.
Kelvin Kight – Also racked up a lot of receiving yards. But does he have the versatility of Childress or Jones?
CJ Jones – Was very impressive in the return game as well as the receiving game. Practice squad lock, and a consideration for a roster spot.
Marcellus Rivers – Fumbled once, but after a one handed catch. Over the course of the preseason, he was surprisingly impressive. I think he may have earned a roster spot over Garrett Mills.
Dante Wesley – Had tight coverage, and it paid off with an INT on a deflected pass. With Mike Richardson out, he might be worth keeping on the roster.
Chris Hanson – Was impressive, pinned his opponents within the five twice.
Matt Gutierrez – looked good leading the offense in the fourth quarter. Finished off with a touchdown pass to a wide open Bam Childress. ALSO PLAYED ON THE KICKOFF TEAM!!!
Matt Cassel – 10/14, 99 yards. He also lead the team to a touchdown. He looked like he had total control of the offense, which is a good thing coming from your backup quarterback.
Vinny Testaverde – Despite a badly thrown interception, he still showed some poise in the pocket, and made some nice throws.
Brandon Meriweather – played safety, and was just flying around there like a torpedo.
Corey Mays – Stepped in for an injured Oscar Lua on the first drive. Although he didn’t seem too strong tackling, he made some nice stops.
Eric Alexander – Very solid tackler, likely locked up a roster spot.
Chad Brown – Wreaking havoc behind the line. Showed that he might have a little left in the tank. I’d say he’s got a 50-50 shot at a roster spot.

Agree with you on pretty much all of the players with the exception of Cory Mays and Chad Brown. I really think Brown is just washed up and the only reason BB likes to bring him into camp is so he can share his vast knowledge of how to play linebacker with the younger players. He was a great player but he isn’t close to what he was anymore, or in fact even what he was two years ago.

Why would Belichick bring him back again? It doesn’t make much sense, considering he obviously didn’t think he would make the team.
