Go Offense!

Lately the sports media has been endlessy debating whether the Patriots have been running up scores against opponents and, if so, why they are doing so. All I can say is that they are certainly not pulling any punches and it is a little un-Belichick-like to needlessly score so much. As I have watched the Patriots over the years I have noticed that Coach Belichick had obeyed the unspoken rule of not actively pursuing touchdowns over what was necessary to win the game at hand. Now his offense has seemingly abandoned this respect in favor of the record books, or whatever other theory may be advanced.
Whatever the reason, I approve of scoring as many points as the offense is capable of. After all, no one criticizes a defense for shutting out an opponent. Why is the offense held to a different standard? What if the Patriots’ offense is so potent, while the defense is only slightly above average, that the coaching staff feels that it is necessary to vastly outscore the opposition so as to not expose this weakness? I don’t think there is such a weakness, especially as Richard Seymour and Rodney Harrison have returned to duty but it could have explained previous outrageous scorelines.
If an incredible outouring of offense strongly influences a Patriots win then by all means, pour it on! What counts is the left side of the “win” column, and offense plays a leading role in wins. Go offense!
