2009 NFL Draft Prospect to Watch: Domonique Johnson

Heading into the 2009 draft, cornerback looks to be an area of need.  And boy, does cornerback look like a strong position this season.  Of course there are the big names; Vontae Davis, Malcolm Jenkins, Alphonso Smith.  They will all be covered eventually.  But today, and I understand this is early, I want to eye a possible sleeper, Jackson State cornerback Domonique Johnson.

Johnson, at 6′2″, 190 lbs, has a large frame and has the room to add weight.  He has clocked in at 4.38 on his 40 yard dash.  He started his collegiate career at Missouri, but eventually transferred to the sub-division school, Jackson State.  Johnson has above average ball-skills, and has recorded 11 interceptions on his career.  He is sometimes a bit raw in technique, but that can be worked on.

I don’t know what it is, but something about Johnson really intrigues me.  He has the size and the speed as well as the potential.  While his stock could sky-rocket if he has a good combine, he currently projects to be a late second round pick.  If the Patriots selected him, I would be ecstatic.

Looks intriguing but one of the things I read about the kid is that he might be a safety and there might not be good reasons why he had to transfer
