The Seau Effect

Earlier this week, I read that Junior Seau wasn’t ready to make a decision about retiring, so at this point, he would, at least in some sense, consider coming back for a 19th season.

When Bruschi went down with only four games in the season, and Seau was called upon, I never would have imagined that he would step into the starting role as quickly as he did and be as effective as he was.

Intensity at its Finest

Junior Seau: Intensity at its Finest

In four games, Junior Seau totaled 22 tackled, 15 solo.  While those numbers aren’t that flashy, consider that in his first game, after being with the team for just 2 full days, he recorded just one tackle.  In fact, his last two games combined, he recorded 16 tackles.  For a 39 year old going on 40, wow.

Despite being out of the game for nearly a year, Seau came in and competed immediately.  Playing with great intensity.  He may not run a 4.6 anymore, but he can still get the job done.  He is still, amazingly, of the strongest and best tacklers in the league.  He also has a football I.Q. that is unmatched.

Consider this, what I am now calling the “Seau Effect:”

In games that Junior Seau has played in since joining the team in the summer of 2006, the Patriots are 30-4.  In games that Seau starts, the Patriots have let up an average of 13.1 points per game.

Chew on that.

I’m just wondering, have I made my case clear?  Should the Patriots try to bring back Seau for another season?  Because as sad at it is, I think Seau can do more for us than Bruschi can at this point.
