Patriots Trade For Derrick Burgess

Derrick Burgess
The Patriots have finally addressed their biggest need. Today, the Patriots announced the acquisition of defensive end/outside linebacker Derrick Burgess from the Oakland Raiders.
Burgess, 6-2, 260 pounds, gives the Patriots a proven pass rusher who can put his hand down or line up on the outside. Either way, he will be a pass rusher, whether through sub-packages or as a starter.
The trade will likely be for a 2010 third or fourth round pick. Whatever it is, I am ecstatic. The Patriots finally have some insurance for Pierre Woods/Shawn Crable/Tully Banta-Cain, as well as a proven pass rusher. Burgess has 47.0 sacks for his career, including a 16 sack season in 2005.
Call me crazy, but by filling this whole. I believe the Patriots finally have a championship caliber defense.

I am very excited to see this defense play. We went from having a questionable defense at the end of last season to having quite possibly a top-5 defense in the league. Our defensive line speaks for itself. Having Burgess, Mayo and Thomas at linebacker along with Bruschi can be very dangerous. Our secondary has great depth and talent at the cornerback position to couple with some young talent at safety. This is going to be a great season!

They are the clear favorite now.

This is a great move. I agree with R1ZZ023 that this really helps the front seven and to only give up a third and a fifth is sweet.
I just wonder how Crable, Guyton, and Woods will be affected now. Almost assuredly one will get cut.

I hope not to sounds too confident, but I believe that there will be a few blowouts in our favor this year, allowing us to give Crable, Guyton and Woods some burn.

Well I think Guyton will see some time as OLB in the 4-3… but he will mostly be seeing time inside, because he seemed to struggle playing OLB last year.

I am surprised we could get Burgess for what we gave up, considering he is an all-pro caliber player (16 sack season in 2005, 47 career!). This will make our defense that much better. If only we still had Rodney and Vrabel! This team is as good as any other Patriots team of the past…
