As much as I'd love to be prooved wrong it just won't happen this year. If you look at the Patriots off season we have made some improvements: at TE with 2 promising rookies and a good veteran. However the patriots lack of fortune has been very detrimental with the loss of Leigh Bodden the secondary has become significantly weaker and the cutting of Burgess leaves us with no OLBs that are an outstanding threat on the pass rush. Despite Belichick's best efforts to bolster the WR set again we've been infinitely unlucky with welker just returning and Holt out for the season, Aiken cut and Moss still without a new contract New England have actually taken a step forward an 2 steps back.

The general weakening of the Patriots isn't the only factor to counter though as the Other teams in AFC east have made steps forward. Most noticeably the Jets with Revis back and the addition of Cromartie (who could be great or a massive error) the secondary could leave the patriots with only their flimsy running attack. The Jets have also brought in LT and although many of the pundits have passed over him largely as being a threat they seem to have forgotten that the Jets have the best run blocking OL in the league so he could have a massive season along with Green.

Although the Dolphin's and Bills probably don't threaten to win the division they could deffinitely upset the Patriots with Marshall giving Henne a target and drawing the secondaries attention and Spiller for the Bills being unpredictable with the possibility of having a very promising rookie year.

I would like to hear reasons why I'm wrong and I still think we can put up a good fight.

Jimmy Graham probably has one of the highest ceilings of any tight end in this draft. But he's a risk. Never really put up big numbers, more of a basketball player than a football player.

But he has such high potential, he could be worth it at #53. I guess it depends on who else is still around

Yeah, the man might not be the receiver he once was, but he's not bad, and he is one of the best blocking tight ends in the league. All the Pats need to do is pair him with a young receiving tight end, and the position is set.

I'm not expert on the uncapped year, but I'm pretty sure the Jets could sign Adalius. As a final four team, they're entitled to sign one high-level free agent, and can pass any player that passes through waivers, and I'm 99% sure Thomas, although an accrued veteran, counts as passing through the waiver system.

Interestingly, this may be a reason for the Patriots to hang on to Thomas, at least until they get a trade partner for Thomas. If Thomas is released, I think he will go to the Jets under Rex Ryan. And I don't think any Patriots fan would want to see that. If a team is willing to take his cap hit, there's no question Thomas can be a good player, although his time with the Patriots has likely come to an end.

Just wondering if the Jets could sign Adalius Thomas if/when he is cut by us.

I know for the CBA, final four teams can only sign free agents equal to value they lose to free agents (if that makes sense), OR they can sign any player that passes through the waiver system.

I know A.D. is a vet of more than four years, so he wouldn't technically go through the waiver system, so I don't think the Jests could sign him, but does anyone know for sure?

.... reason I'm so interested is because we know that Rex Ryan, A.D.'s old defensive coordinator, is fat and greedy and would savor the chance to bring Thomas back to his system.

And under the current CBA, a 2011 draft is guaranteed, although a 2011 season may not be.

As for your two points, I agree with the first. I think the Pats are greatly jepoardizing the 2009 season by trading away one of their best defensive players, who I believe is still in his prime. I guess the Patriots really are moving to a 4-3, and I think Jarvis Green will finally get his chance to shine.

Thanks for the help.

Guess Big Sey looked pretty good in that first game for the Raiders. That trade could really open the door for them in the AFC west.

Well, football is finally back. After all the draft preparations, OTA's, mini-camps, trades, free agent signings, and grueling training camp practices, the Patriots are finally ready to shake off the rust and play their first pre-season game, this one on the road at Philly.

There's no question what the number one story is: the return of Tom Brady. Brady will definitely playin his first live-game action since September 2008 tonight, that's not a question. But there are questions. How much will Brady play? A series? Two? A quarter? Also, how is Brady going to play? Will he show confidence in the pocket? How will he react to taking his first hit (I think every person in New England will be holding their breath the first time that happens).

Ultimately, I believe Tom will play two or three series, depending on how he performs out of the gate. And based on the confidence and ability he has shown thus far in camp, Patriots fans will get to see the Tom Brady of old.

While most eyes will likely be on Tom Brady tonight, there are many other positions that Patriots fans should keep their eyes on. At quarterback, Brian Hoyer, Andrew Walter, and Kevin O'Connell are likely fighting for one or two spots. At cornerback, the up and coming Jonathan Wilhite will try to hold off veteran Shawn Springs, with youngsters Terrence Wheatley and Darius Butler also in the mix. At tight end, the Patriots have Ben Watson, David Thomas, Alex Smith, and Chris Baker; all looking to secure roster spots. Running back; who will emerge as the primary back on first and second downs? And at outside linebacker, Shawn Crable, Pierre Woods, and Tully Banta-Cain will all be looking to earn playing time/roster spots, while newcomer Derrick Burgess will don his number 49 Patriots jersey for the first time.

Players to Watch

1. Tom Brady, QB, #12

2. Terrence Nunn, WR, #10

3. Gary Guyton, ILB, #59

4. Jonathan Wilhite, CB, #24

5. Pat Chung, SS, #25

6. Sebastian Vollmer, T, #76

7. Derrick Burgess, OLB, #49

8. Jerod Mayo, ILB, #51

9. Brian Hoyer, QB, #8

10. Shawn Crable, OLB, #98

The shuttle is definitely a good gauge for a player expected to play more slot than out wide, so that's a great sign. Definitely sounds like a punt returner right away and would be interesting to see if they line him up in the slot with Welker, Moss and Galloway on the field at the same time.

I don't like looking to the future with this team, but if Brandon Tate can recover from that knee injury, maybe he and Edelman can be a nice 1-2 punch down the road.
