This is an issue that has probably been around since the loss of Corey Dillon, although Maroney showed brief promise he is far too injury prone and never had the edge he showed at college. This is why it is good that he is now gone however this leaves us with a gaping hole for an explosive first choice running back. Fred Taylor no longer has the edge and explosion through the hole that made him a legend and although Faulk is an awsome 3rd down weapon he is no 1st choice back and he now has an injury that rules him out of most of this season. Sammy Morris is another affective weapon when used selectively but not an affective 1st choice back. The recent addition of Woodhead won't help the lack of a 1st choice back.

So what will Belicheck do. There are 3 options: 1st of all he can try and trade for a back now as soon as possible so we have a back for the rest of the season; this however is hard as there are no obvious choices Jacobs has recently had a falling out with the Giants but hasn't put in a trade request. The other option is to try and get by almost entirely without a running game for the rest of the season and use the first round of the draft to get a RB for the future to build a franchise around. This I think would be the best option as he'd have a chance to aclimatise while we still have Brady then once Brafy has retired he can become the center of the offence. Another option is to try and get a more experienced RB in the offseason free agent market. This would be good in the short term but would mean we'd have our QB and RB retireing at the same time.
